Dare-to-Dream Teen Summit
The theme was "Peace" for this year's Dare-to-Dream Teen Summit March 2. Following the program, participating high school students, Leadership Columbus Alumni (LCA) members and guests were deeply moved by the guest speaker Joseph Sebarenzi. In spite of the personal tragedy of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, Sebarenzi's message is one of peace, forgiveness and, ultimately, reconciliation. This annual event is sponsored by the LCA and the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce. Its mission is to help young people grow into productive citizens with high esteem while valuing and respecting the differences of others. For more information, please contact Becky Gordon at bgordon@columbusgachamber.com or 706-327-1566.

Internet marketing
by EC/IT Committee member Elaine Johnson, WSI Internet Consultant, www.wsiweb4u.com

According to Internet World Statistics, 68.1% of the U.S. population is online, a 103% increase since 2000. According to Verisign, 1,000,000 new websites are added to the internet EVERY MONTH.

Why has the internet grown so fast and become so powerful?

Because the internet lets businesses target and advertise to people who WANT to know what the business has to say!

Only a small percentage of television viewers pay attention to television commercials.   Most will either ignore the ad or be annoyed by it. This is true for newspaper, radio and almost all advertising.

But the internet is different!

On the internet, businesses can advertise specifically to people trying to find out about that business’s product or service.

For example, when someone types in a search for ‘2006 cars’ they WANT to know about cars.  That’s the best time for a car dealer to advertise, because that’s when people are actively interested and looking for information about cars!.

Another example is an artist in Columbus. He’s been in business since 1988 selling a high-end and rather obscure type of work to businesses, non-profits and government agencies. He’s had several different websites since 1997, but they were all lost in the trillions of websites on the internet.

Late last year he decided to change tactics. With professional help, he started an active internet marketing strategy. As a result, he made his first sale in January 2006 and is now in negotiations with 21 more prospective buyers.

That’s how fast the right internet marketing strategy can bring in hard-to-find customers for a business!

Partners In Education Troy University, the Military Police Activity join together to provide Faith Middle School students a special day

Faith Middle School students listen to a storyteller during their recent Partners In Education field trip.
Faith Middle School's Partners In Education (PIE) partners participated in a joint activity to provide students exposure to the arts and the wonderful world of reading. This extraordinary event was coordinated by Faith's Assistant Principal Angie Cotton along with PIE representatives Susan Parsons of Troy University and 1st Lt. Bolanos of the Military Police Activity.

Their planning resulted in an awesome field trip Jan. 19 for Faith Middle School's READ-180 students as well as some math students. "These students were treated to the Columbus Museum and Barnes and Nobles Booksellers, with lunch at Jason's Deli," said Cotton. "One of the goals of these two partnerships was to dedicate efforts toward students who are working hard to hone their reading and math skills."

One of the highlights at the Columbus Museum was the presentation by Emily Williams, a teacher at Troy University and a local sculptor, who gave a short presentation on her work as an artist. Following a delicious lunch served by the staff of Jason's Deli, the day concluded with a tour of Barnes and Nobles, with storytelling and another fabulous guest speaker. Troy University's Dr. Roger Zeimet, a published journalist, shared a wealth of knowledge with the students. Dr. Zeimet recently retired as Fort Benning's historian.

One would have thought the day couldn't get any better, but a chance happening occurred as the students exited Barnes and Nobles. They were fondly greeted by Columbus Mayor Bob Poydasheff who spoke with the students about the importance of education. At the end of their trip, the students were very grateful to their PIE partners for a most rewarding and memorable day.

For more information about Partners In Education, please contact Phyllis Lott at plott@columbusgachamber.com or 706-327-1566 or visit www.partnersineducationcolumbusga.com.

How to politely handle panhandling

Nearly everyone, at one time or another, has had someone ask them for spare change. The advice from the Columbus Business Improvement District, when asked for spare change, is to politely say “no” or “sorry.”

People who panhandle may need help, but the experience of social services agencies indicates that money given to individuals on the street often supports destructive habits, including alcohol and drug addiction.

Please report any panhandling activity to the Purple Ambassadors or contact the Columbus Business Improvement District at 706-322-9078.

Career Connections initiative starts

The Partnership for Workforce Development kicked off the "Valley Promise's" Career Connections initiative with a training workshop Feb. 24 for educators from the Columbus region.

The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce formed the Partnership for Workforce Development in response to the economic need for greater workforce preparation. Chaired by Steve Melton, president Columbus Bank and Trust Company, the partnership is comprised of volunteer businesses, community and educational leaders and is administered through the Education and Workforce Development Department of the Chamber.

Dr. Laurel Blackwell, president of Chattahoochee Valley Community College, talks to the volunteer speakers Feb. 29 who have agreed to go out to area schools and talk about their jobs, work ethics and career progressions.

The "Valley Promise" is the partnership's and the Columbus region's commitment to developing and sustaining a highly qualified and skilled workforce through education, training and dynamic partnerships.

The "Valley Promise's" key initiatives include:

  • Career Connections/Work Ethics Training
  • High School Transcripts
  • Workforce Training Brochures

The Career Connections initiative currently has more than 100 speakers available to educators throughout the region to present their story on real-life career choices they made. They share with students the impact that occupational skills and good work habits have had on careers and the professional world of work. Training brochures and materials are utilized by the speakers to assist the students in the learning process.

For more information or if you are interested in becoming a speaker for the program, please contact Phyllis Lott at plott@columbusgachamber.com or 706-327-1566 or visit http://www.columbusgachamber.com/workforce/.

February Hometown Hero
Chester's Barbeque received the Hometown Hero award at the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce Power Lunch Feb. 9. The fifth generation of Chesters are currently working in the business with Trent and Cal at the helm.

In 1939, a farmer named Jack Chester opened a small store on St. Mary's Road, near Fort Benning. The store was originally located on the west side of Dawson Drive and later moved to its present location at 213 Northstar Drive in Columbus. A few changes in the structure of the building took place and it became "Mr. Jack's" grocery store. Jack died in 1968 and it was passed on to his sister Cal and her husband. The grocery store has been passed on to other family members that are continuing Jack's legacy.

One day at the store, Cal decided to barbecue some ribs for the family. Customers thought those ribs were for sale...and the rest is history. Rib sandwiches sold for $2.00. From one grill the barbecue business grew larger requiring remodeling, and the addition of more grills, to the grocery store.

Subsequently, Trent and his uncle, David Chester, thought the business needed to expand. In 2003, the two of them opened Chester's Barbeque in Uptown Columbus at 547 Veterans Parkway. Their mission statement is "to provide the best food at the best price with the best service." Chester's Barbeque was awarded the People's Choice Award in 2004 for the Best Barbeque in town. Between the two stores, they sell more than 200,000 pounds of ribs a year. In addition, they offer Catering by Chester's.

To be eligible for the Hometown Hero award, recipients must be members of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce, have a current business license, be locally owned or operated and have been in business for at least one year. For more information, please contact Marie Cordero at mcordero@columbusgachamber.com or 706-327-1566.
