The Fort Benning and Columbus region have a number of areas of interest to
visitors and residents of the area. Some of these are located in Columbus, such
as Port Columbus, which is a
National Civil War Maritime Museum, while others are located a short drive from
Fort Benning. Some other special locations of interest include Andersonville
Civil War Prisoner of War Camp, and Andersonville National Prisoner of War
Museum, Plains, Georgia, which is
home to Jimmy Carter, Franklin D.
Roosevelt's Little White House, and the FDR Museum, in Warm Springs, and Fort
Mitchell. There are several other Battlefields for visitors and military
staff rides within this region to include Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Tallapoosa,
AL, Kennesaw Battlefield, Marietta, GA, Chickamauga Battlefield, north Georgia,
and others.
