Public-Private Partnerships
The Columbus, Georgia Region is a region that has generated more than $2.9
billion in capital investment and created more than 40,000 new jobs since 1988.
Public-private partnerships have been the key to this growth. In this community
you will find leaders working together to advance the region. The public private
partnerships have had a major impact on every facet of the region. Including:
- Raising more than $100 million through the "Columbus Challenge"
for the River Center for the
Performing Arts, renovate the Springer Opera House the state theater of
Georgia, expand the historic Liberty Theater Cultural Center and provide
funding to seven other arts organizations
- More than $170 million raised in 1993 in the first one-cent sales tax
campaign used for the Combined Sewer Overflow project, the 17-mile Riverwalk,
the new Public Safety Complex, creating sidewalks near schools, parks and
recreation projects, a 10,000-seat Civic Center, creating the South Commons
Sports Complex, which helped Columbus become an Olympic Host City in 1996.
- The National Infantry Foundation which was created to by the National
Infantry Association in 1998 for the sole purpose of raising the $75 million
necessary to build the new National
Infantry Museum enjoys remarkable support and encouragement from the
City of Columbus and from the Columbus community. The City will deed its
half of the 200-acre site to the Foundation at no cost. Recognizing the
ongoing economic benefit that will result from the construction of the new
museum, the City is working closely with the Foundation to make this project
a success. Local philanthropists have energetically endorsed the project. It
is a $75 million project has received over $40 million in donations to date.
- The Cunningham Center is a
67,500-square-foot building, which has a final price tag of about $10
million, started with a $4 million gift and a bequest to the university from
John Cunningham, a lifelong salesman who possessed a true passion for the
sales profession and learning.
- Partners In
Education is an innovative, effective program that offers the community,
including business and various non-profit, civic, higher education,
religious, social and professional organizations, the best opportunity to
directly strengthen education. The goal of partnerships is to provide caring
human resources from the community to enhance quality education, improve
student achievement, support instruction and recognize student performance.
