Key Issues From 2010 Legislative
Agenda:
- Support the Columbus Consolidated Government position on
legislation to provide local governments with point of sale data. This
information is critical to economic development trends and is insightful in
determining at what level companies contribute tax payments.
- Support legislation that requires municipals users who
remove water from the Chattahoochee River to return a minimum of 75% back to
the river and an across the board standard for industry users to return a
minimum of 50% understanding the age of various facilities currently in
operation.
- Support legislation that will modernize telecommunication
laws by eliminating outdated regulations and subsidies that distort and
hamper the competitive marketplace.
- Support legislation to place restrictions on the use of
septic tanks in new developments communities are densely populated capable
of infrastructure investment such as sewer and water lines.
- Support a fair and equitable funding strategy to address
transportation needs in Georgia for continued economic development purposes
to include transit and rail initiatives.
- Support the continued funding of education &
infrastructure resources related to BRAC Growth in the region.
- Support the Columbus State University request for eminent
scholar matching funds.
- Support the Columbus State University capital budget request
for an academic classroom building to be included in the 2011 planning
budget and the 2012 construction budget.
- Encourage the State of Georgia to recognize municipal solid
waste as a renewable energy source in concert with the forthcoming Cap &
Trade legislation proposed by the federal government. 28 states in the
country have done so currently. This recognition would enable the Columbus
Consolidated Government, Ft. Benning, GA, & the Valley Partnership to
move forward with a Waste to Energy project thus decreasing or need for land
fills and making our Region a better steward of the environment.
