Piggly Wiggly Named Small Business Giant

Posted September 26, 2013

JTM Corporation/Piggly Wiggly was named the Small Business Giant for September 2013. The award was presented to Keith Mulligan at the Eye-Opener breakfast. The monthly Small Business Giant award is selected by the Chamber's Small Business Recognition Committee and winners must be in business for a minimum of five years and have proven growth and community service efforts.

Founder of JTM Corporation, Tommy Milligan, worked for a group of Columbus, Georgia area Piggly Wiggly supermarket owner/operators for many years. He worked originally as a butcher in one of their locations and worked his way up to meat supervisor for the six store group.
The opportunity to buy one of these stores presented itself in 1966. Tommy borrowed the money to buy this first location from a local bank and paid for this store within the first two years of operation thanks to hard work, long hours and determination. Through the years the family run company has grown primarily through acquisition of existing supermarket locations and now operates or manages nineteen Piggly Wiggly supermarkets. All stores are within an hour’s drive from the Phenix City, Alabama main office which enables close supervision of store operations.
The first Piggly Wiggly store in Columbus opened in 1918 on Broadway. Columbus was one of the first cities in the nation to have a new Piggly Wiggly. Piggly Wiggly has been big part of the Columbus community ever since.

Piggly Wiggly's introduction of self-service grocery shopping in 1916 truly revolutionized the grocery industry. In fact, many of the conveniences and services that American shoppers now enjoy were introduced first by Piggly Wiggly.

Piggly Wiggly was the FIRST to…
…provide checkout stands.
…price mark every item in the store.
…give shoppers more for their food dollar through high volume/low profit margin retailing.
…feature a full line of nationally advertised brands.
…use refrigerated cases to keep produce fresher longer.
…put employees in uniforms for cleaner, more sanitary food handling.
…design and use patented fixtures and equipment throughout the store.
…franchise independent grocers to operate under the self-service method of food merchandising.

Congratulations JTM Corp./Piggly Wiggly on being named the September 2013 Small Business Giant!
