Bob Barr Community Band

The Bob Barr Community Band has scheduled two FREE events to celebrate Independence Day. The annual Easter Seals concert features the Bob Barr Community Band and other local performers in a 75-minute dynamic Independence Day Concert designed for the entire family July 3, 7:30 pm, at the RiverCenter Bill Heard Theatre. The concert promotes patriotism and recognizes veterans and public servants from the community. Come in person to the RiverCenter box office, Monday through Friday from 12:00-5:00 pm to pick up free general admission tickets. A second free concert-Community 4th of July Celebration-is scheduled for July 4, at 3:30 pm at the Bradley Theatre.

Mr. Robert Barr

The Bob Barr Community Band began as a memorial tribute to Robert M. Barr, the conductor of the Jordan High School Band in Columbus, Georgia, from 1946 to 1963. Under his direction, the Jordan High School Band achieved the highest acclaim winning many state and national titles. He was a positive influence on the lives of hundreds of young people as a teacher and friend. He died in 1988.

The Bob Barr Community Band is a concert band of more than 50 musicians who enjoy playing concerts of band music for musical enjoyment. The band usually plays six to 12 concerts a year in Georgia and Alabama for public entertainment and community events. Programs include concert selections, marches, show and pop tunes, seasonal and patriotic numbers.

The goals of the Bob Barr Community Band include performing the best possible music for themselves and their listeners, promoting cultural pride in the community, and broadening appreciation for the musical excitement, style, and sounds which only a concert band can provide. In addition, the band strongly supports a quality music program in area schools and continues to provide support and assistance to music students, music teachers and school bands.

The Bob Barr Community Band depends on public support to assist in achieving its goals. Your attendance at performances, enthusiastic support and contributions are most helpful and gratefully appreciated. For more information about the concerts or if you have an interest in joining the band, please contact Dr. George Corradino, conductor, at 706-323-4649 or visit www.geocities.com/bobbarrband.

Columbus Symphony Orchestra announces new executive director

JJ Musgrove
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is pleased to announce that JJ Musgrove has accepted the position of executive director beginning June 1. The CSO Search Committee didn’t have to look too far to find Musgrove; he was currently employed as the education coordinator for both the CSO and the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. He was chosen from more than 30 applicants from around the world and was one of four final interviewees. Musgrove has almost 15 years of administrative experience as well as his artistic background to bring to the role of executive director of the CSO.

“In the short time that we have known JJ, it has become obvious that he is a person of enthusiasm, intellect and integrity. We believe that his work on behalf of the CSO in his new capacity as executive director will greatly enhance the orchestra’s visibility in the community and presence on the stage,” said George Del Gobbo, CSO music director and conductor. “I am looking forward to a long and fruitful collaboration.”

Musgrove is originally from Columbus but soon after his birth at Fort Benning, his family moved to Butler, Missouri, where he graduated from high school. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Music from Graceland University in Iowa in 1992 and went on to attend the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. Musgrove returned to Iowa in 1994 and worked at Graceland University as the coordinator of fine arts recruiting/assistant dean of admissions.

While at Graceland, Musgrove also served as an adjunct instructor of theatre and developed an interdisciplinary fine arts class at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. He also served as chair of the Academic Legislative Affairs Committee for the Iowa Association of College Admission Counselors for two years.  In 1999 he went back to graduate school and earned his Masters in Theatre with concentrations in directing and arts administration from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri, in 2001.

In 2001 he moved to Abingdon, Virginia, and became the coordinator of the National Appalachian Festival for Plays and Playwrights for the Barter Theatre where he also was a Resident Company Member. He was also hired part-time by Emory and Henry College as a theatre recruiter and within two years helped grow their theatre program by 400%.

Upon arriving in Columbus, Musgrove started working at the Springer Opera House as a Summer Theatre Academy instructor and as an actor. At the Springer he has been seen in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Man of La Mancha, Sarah Plain and Tall and, recently, The Odd Couple. He has also formed his own theatre company, The Chattahoochee Theatre Ensemble, and has produced  I Do! I Do! at The Human Experience Theatre, spring of 2004 and The Brothers Wright at RiverCenter, summer of 2004. Overall, Musgrove has been an actor in more than 50 productions, directed many shows throughout the midwest and southeast, and has been a guest workshop instructor in improvisation, audition techniques, and arts administration practice. The summer of 2005 he will be directing The Frog Prince and The Invisible Dragon for the Columbus Museum’s Wonderful Wednesday’s program. He has also been a guest director at Columbus State University and an adjunct instructor of theatre.

He was hired as the education coordinator for the CSO and RiverCenter for the Performing Arts in the fall of 2004. While in that position, Musgrove helped develop RiverCenter’s ArtsREACH program, developing a permanent website for the department and creating study guides for performance related activities. He coordinated the Terrence Wilson, pianist, workshop with the Columbus Music Teacher’s Association and helped organize the Bobby McFerrin workshop with the Columbus Youth Orchestra at the Liberty Theatre. Musgrove worked closely with Muscogee, Harris, Marion, Chattahoochee, and Russell (AL) school districts as well as private schools to coordinate a successful two-day Young People’s Concerts for fourth and fifth graders. In addition, he expanded the annual CSO Family Concert (A Dr. Seuss Sunday-2005 theme).

For more information about the CSO, visit www.csoga.org or call 706-323-5059.
