Evita - the woman, the musical

Winner of seven Tony Awards, Evita brings to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Peron.

Maria Eva Duarte de Peron's life begged to be set to music and presented to the world. The quintessential story of rags to riches never fails to appeal. Add in the tragedy of an untimely death of a beautiful young woman who is beloved by the people she championed in her country and the drama seems certain to become a hit.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice began working on Evita in 1974. One of the most compelling collaborations between Webber and Rice, the musical features the memorable song "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." The first staging was on June 21, 1978 in London. The American Premiere of the musical took place on May 8, 1979. When it reached Broadway, Evita took almost every major award and played sold out houses for years. Several touring companies developed to take the show on the road and a 1996 movie, featuring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, was produced.

The story is told entirely through song and dance. It chronicles the life of Maria Eva Duarte de Peron. It begins in 1934 and follows her life. Eva's life began in 1919 in the poverty of the Buenos Aires' Province of Los Toldos. The last born of five children, she and her family lived in a squalid one room house. Her father died when she was seven.

Leaving home when she was 14, Eva was determined to become Argentina's leading actress. Eva's affair with Colonel Juan Domingo Peron was a turning point in her climb upward. She met him in 1944 at a benefit for a town that was nearly destroyed by an earthquake. Eva did not become Argentina's leading actress, but she did become the wife of the most powerful man in Argentina when she married Peron on October 19, 1945. On June 4, 1946, Peron became President of Argentina.

Eva was, of course, first lady. She and her husband were a brilliant political team. Eva championed the working class poor and they loved her for it. She asked them to call her Evita. On the other hand she was hated by Argentina's bourgeois. Evita was an extraordinary woman who lived an extraordinary life. It was a short life. She died on July 26, 1952 from leukemia and uterine cancer.

Evita will be presented on Wednesday, Feb. 1 and Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bill Heard Theatre, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, 900 Broadway, Columbus, Georgia.

To make it a really memorable evening, RiverCenter has teamed up with Meritage Café to provide an Argentinean dinner to theatre goers on opening night, Feb.1 at 5:30 p.m. The special-menu dinner is $30. Space is limited, so reservations are required. Call 706-327-0707 to make reservations.

Tickets to Evita are priced from $47.50 - $60. For tickets call 1-888-322-5200, buy online at www.rivercenter.org or drop by the RiverCenter box office between the hours of 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday - Friday, and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday.

Patricia Phillips
RiverCenter's first employee

Patricia Phillips

Observing the RiverCenter of the Perfoming Arts as it now stands, occupying the complete block between 10th and 9th streets and Broadway Avenue and 1st Avenue in uptown Columbus, its hard to remember how the space looked before the facility was built. Patricia Phillips has a vivid memory of the location. She was the very first employee of the facility.

The result of an ambitious endeavor between the public and private sector, the RiverCenter became a reality after the community raised $87-million dollars through the Community Projects Foundation. Phillips was the person responsible for tracking those funds. She was hired by James Beaudoin, the center's executive director and Tom Black, a RiverCenter trustee in 1998. The center opened in 2002.

A native of Phenix City, Phillips has strong career affiliations with the area. She left the area for 10 years while she worked for the NBC television affiliate in Montgomery, AL. After returning to the area, she worked for the historic Lummus Industries before they moved to Savannah.

With RiverCenter for eight years, she now serves as the human resources director in charge of all hiring and employee-related issues. For her dedicated service and devotion to RiverCenter, she is appreciated by staff and Board members alike. RiverCenter Trustee Tom Black states, "Pat has been a stellar employee. She takes her job seriously and works so well with people."

Phillips is very active in the community. She is affiliated with the SHRM (Society for Human Resources); The Exchange Club of Phenix City (2004-2005 President); was involved with helping establish W.I.N.G.S. (houses built solely by women) for Habitat for Humanity - Russell County; and is on the Chattahoochee Valley Community College's Board of Trustees.

Artistic expression is an important part of Phillip's life. She has served as the pianist for her church. She is active in the Amen Choir and the Alleluia Choir of her church Lakewood Baptist Church in Phenix City. She is married to William Phillips and they both take delight in sons Jason and Scott, but the four grandchildren claim most of their attention.

"Butch Anthony Museum of Wonder"
Exhibition opens Jan. 30, reception Feb. 7

The Columbus State University Department of Art will host an exhibition titled "Butch Anthony Museum of Wonder" from Jan. 30 through March 7 in the Gallery, Fine Arts Hall. A gallery reception featuring Anthony, a folk artist from Seale, Ala., is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 7. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Anthony creates assemblages resulting in the whimsical, the fantastical and the uncanny in his Museum of Wonder, said CSU art professor Michele McCrillis. "The juxtapositions in Anthony's paintings and sculptures stem from the layers of found objects, images, and language culled from his elaborate collections of 'stuff.' Butch Anthony holds the magnifying glass over us to see the beauty, the wonder and the extraordinary in all."

Anthony has been working increasingly on site-specific installations, including a recent collaborative project with the Center for Sustainable Development at the University of Texas to develop housing designs for Yaqui single mothers and their children living in the Sonora Desert of Northern Mexico. The project won the prestigious Cooper-Hewitt 2005 National Design Awards "Special Jury Commendation Award."

During this semester, Anthony will work with CSU art students in professor Trish Ramsey's sculpture class on a permanent site specific installation at Oxbow Meadows.

Fine Arts Hall gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call 706-568-2047 or visit http://art.colstate.edu/. Pictured below are two of Anthony's artworks that will be featured in the exhibition; for more information about the artist, visit http://www.museumofwonder.com/.

Butch Anthony is also featured in several museums around the region, including The Columbus Museum, the Birmingham Museum, and a museum in New Orleans. (Source)
