Speaker's Guide

Speaker Evaluation

The following guide was developed to assist Career Speakers in having a uniform and consistent message that all students could benefit from. It will also assist students in understanding the connection between what is expected at school and what will be expected at work.

  1. Give a brief bio on yourself (including education, job history, family, "avocations").

  2. Discuss how you made decisions relating to high school electives, post secondary education, career choices.

  3. What would you do differently if you could "go back to school"?

  4. Explain how you use language and math skills in your job? (Include listening, following directions, reading, writing, speaking (one on one and to groups), using numbers with budgets, etc

  5. Discuss work behavior skills that are important and how they relate to school behavioral requirements (i.e., arriving on time, attendance, ability to get along with teachers(bosses) and classmates (co-workers), turning work in on time, doing your own work - not cheating, managing your time, working on group projects).

  6. Describe a time you failed at something and how you learned and recovered from that failure.

  7. Tell the class what qualities your company looks for when hiring an individual (professional, technical and personable).

  8. Discuss credit, drug and criminal record checks that many employers require when someone applies for a job.
